5 Greek Dishes that Inspired Me While Sailing

Sencha’s Dishes Sailing in Greece

Sailing through the Aegean Sea this summer wasn't just a feast for the eyes—it was a feast for the soul and the stomach. Each island offered its own twist on Greek classics, and between meals at seaside tavernas, I found myself falling in love with Greece one dish at a time.

Here are five Greek dishes that made me feel at home, even while at sea.

1. Saganaki – Fried Cheese, the Greek Way

There's something magical about pan-fried cheese that sizzles when it hits the table. Saganaki is that perfect golden bite—crispy on the outside, gooey inside, and just salty enough to make you reach for another piece. I ordered it everywhere.

2. Souvlaki – Skewers That Never Disappoint

Whether from a street stall or a proper restaurant, souvlaki was my go-to comfort meal. Juicy grilled meat, warm pita, a squeeze of lemon, and a scoop of tzatziki—perfection.

3. Greek Yogurt with Honey & Fruit – Breakfast Bliss

This wasn't just breakfast—it was a ritual. Thick, creamy yogurt topped with strawberries and just a drizzle of golden honey. So simple, so good.

Onboard twist: I kept a tub of local yogurt in the fridge and made this every morning. Sometimes with sliced peaches, sometimes with nuts—always satisfying.

4. Fried Sardines – The Taste of the Sea

Fried Sardines

Crispy, salty, and full of flavor, fried sardines were a discovery I didn't expect to love as much as I did. Eaten with lemon and maybe a glass of white wine, they made me feel completely immersed in island life.

Favorite moment: Eating them with my hands at a local taverna by the water in Paros.

5. Tzatziki – My New Favorite Everything Sauce

Tzatziki

Creamy yogurt, garlic, cucumber, olive oil, and dill—it doesn't get more refreshing. I had it with souvlaki, bread, grilled veggies, or just by the spoonful when I thought no one was looking.
